{{Quote
|quotetext=I do believe in Twinleaf's guiding values, of youkai and humans living in harmony, but I won't deny there were growing pains. Sure, every human is different, but they're not different enough! They all have two eyes, two arms and legs, and not even a tail - I don't know how many times my neighbors get all the humans mixed up. Humans don't have that problem, though, not with each other or with us. They're pretty quick learners - but with how short their lives are, I guess they have to be.

The human is the only creature belonging to the Humans category. Humans are both sapient and sedentary, making them one of the civilized species of the Mazes.

Lore

Humans (scientific designation homo sapiens) are the oldest sapient species to have ever inhabited the Mazes. Evidence of their existence suggests that they have lived in the Mazes in some form since the very beginning of recorded history. The terms humanity, humankind, mankind or simply men are all used to refer to all humans, as a species.

Humans are the template by which "humanoid" creatures are described. They are creatures descended from primates such as the chimpanzee, having evolved larger brains. Humans are easily recognized by their bipedal stature, their relative lack of body hair exposing most of their skin, five prehensile fingers on each hand with opposable thumbs, but most importantly, their intelligence, their proficiency with tools, and their sapience. All of these factors have contributed to the continued dominance of humanity in the Mazes, even as other sapient creatures were discovered.

Humans were the first sapient species in the Mazes to have reached the status of civilized species; sapient creatures that live in settlements, separate from the Uncivilized Area.

Adult humans reach an average height of about 5 feet 7 inches. Average weight varies depending on sex; about 155 pounds for males and 130 pounds for females. However, they vary greatly in appearance, with many different combinations of height, weight, skin/eye/hair color, and that is without taking in account the even more varied sets of clothing and equipment that they commonly wear, making each individual highly distinct from one another. The typical life expectancy of a human ranges between 60 and 70 years, but certain individuals have reached well beyond 100 years. Science currently believes that without genetic alterations, the absolute maximum lifespan of a human being can be optimized to roughly 120-125 years.

Humans are very social creatures, with a generally low tolerance for prolonged solitude, and a lack of natural means to defend itself. The continued survival of this species has been attributed to the humans' tendency to use their intelligence and tackling every situation as a problem to be solved, modified, or improved. In that regard, there is no creature more adaptable than the human.

The primary language spoken by humans is Common, which is equivalent to the real-world English.

The history of humanity is closely linked to the history of the Mazes in general; they have existed for thousands of years, and played key roles in shaping and reshaping the world across the different eras. Though they have never been the only sapient species to inhabit the Mazes, humans lost their status as the only civilized species since the arrival of the youkai 2300 years ago, and their status as the dominant civilized species has dwindled ever since. In particular, since the arrival of the "offshoot" species of humanity; namely halflings and magicians (413 years ago) and later, psionics (285 years ago), the question of what it truly means to be human has been debated by scientists, philosophers and other thinking heads ever since.
