Saken (Homo ferus ex draconis) are one of the species of feral animal-people (scientific designation homo ferus), species that have evolved to grow humanoid traits and sufficient intelligence to use tools and weapons, but have remained largely 'feral'; they inhabit small, hidden communities in the UA, or are nomadic. They are not considered to be a sapient species, as none are most aren't able to speak a recognizable language, instead speaking in unrecognizable dialects, which seem to vary between species, sometimes between individual groups of tribes within the same species. Biologists believe that feral animal-people are "edge cases" of sapience; they may very well be self-aware, with the potential to one day develop the ability to speak a commonly-used language. Rare individuals are believed to have learned enough Common or Youkai-go to understand it and may even speak or write it.
The name saken comes from the Old Tongue, which is a compound of the words sa (man) and ken (dragon). Literally, this translates to "man-dragon," an apt description of these creatures.
Saken have an average height of 6 feet, with adults weighing about 170 lbs on average. While their bodies are mostly humanoid in structure, their skin is covered in dragon-like scales, granting them additional resistance to damage of all types. They also possess a pair of functional wings, with which they can fly and hover in place. Although these scales are not as large, thick, or durable as those of a dragon, they possess a similar structure and density, and nearly identical molecular composition, including their well-known fire-retardant properties. They also possess a tail and a pair of functional wings, the latter of which they use to fly and hover in place as other winged creatures in the Mazes, such as tengu.
Other dragon-like traits include functional claws in lieu of nails, reptilian eyes, sharp fangs, and most importantly of all, the ability to breathe fire and deliver fireblast attacks. However, as humanoid creatures at the edge of sapience, saken are well-known for their ability to use tools and weapons, and their preference for particular firearms. Despite a relative lack of proficiency in their use, saken are perhaps the most dangerous species of feral animal-people. Adventurers should be careful not to anger them unless prepared to deal with them quickly.
